Week 4 · Living as a disciple

Day 22
Obey with the strength God gives

Before you read, ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand the passage and respond honestly.

Read

Philippians 2:1-16

Read in the ESV ↗

Read the whole passage slowly, twice if you can. Then come back here.

Understand

Paul calls the church to humility shaped by Jesus, who gave himself in obedience and was exalted by the Father. The instructions about working out salvation belong in that context. Believers are to live out God’s saving work with reverence because God himself is at work in them.

This is active dependence. A disciple takes responsibility while relying on the Spirit’s enabling grace. You can obey before you feel confident, asking God to shape both your desires and your actions. Even a complaint or rivalry can become a place to practice a different response. Do not reduce the passage to a private improvement project; notice its concern for the community’s shared life.

Pray

Father, thank you for working in your people. Give me humility like Jesus and willingness to obey. Help me take responsibility without trusting my own strength as the source of change. Amen.

Use this as a starting point, then speak in your own words.

Reflect

Where are you waiting for obedience to feel easy before you begin?

Act today

Choose one clear responsibility you have delayed. Ask for God's help and take the first practical step. If you are unsure whether the step is actually required by Scripture, discuss it with a mature disciple rather than treating guilt alone as God's command.
