Week 3 · Following Jesus with his people
Day 20
Remember Jesus at his table
Before you read, ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand the passage and respond honestly.
Read
1 Corinthians 11:17-29
Read in the ESV ↗Read the whole passage slowly, twice if you can. Then come back here.
Understand
Paul addresses a church whose divisions and treatment of poorer members contradict the meal they share. He recalls Jesus’ institution of the bread and cup and calls for serious self-examination. The Lord’s Supper proclaims Jesus’ death and points toward his return.
Communion directs a disciple toward Christ and also toward the people joined to him. It is not a display of personal superiority. Come with faith, gratitude, repentance, and care for others. Churches differ about participation and how they explain Christ’s presence in the meal. Learn your congregation’s practice rather than treating those differences casually or making assumptions about the next gathering.
Pray
Jesus, thank you for giving yourself for us. Help me remember your death with gratitude. Expose pride and indifference in me, and teach me to honor the people you have brought into your family. Amen.
Use this as a starting point, then speak in your own words.
Reflect
How does the context of this passage connect remembering Jesus with caring for others?
Act today
Ask a pastor or mature disciple how your church observes communion and prepares to receive it. Before the next observance, pray about one relationship or attitude that needs attention. Take a fitting step toward repentance rather than merely rehearsing the concern.
