Week 2 · Learning to abide

Day 13
Let grace bring you into the light

Before you read, ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand the passage and respond honestly.

Read

1 John 1:5-2:2

Read in the ESV ↗

Read the whole passage slowly, twice if you can. Then come back here.

Understand

John rejects the claim that fellowship with God can coexist with denying or concealing sin. He also rejects the claim that believers have become sinless. He points us to confession, God’s faithfulness to forgive, and Jesus Christ as the advocate for his people.

Confession is honest agreement with God about sin. It is not a payment that persuades him to become merciful. Jesus is the basis of forgiveness. As a disciple, you can stop defending what is wrong and bring it to him. His mercy also frees you to seek help and make appropriate repair rather than managing appearances.

Pray

Father, I confess the sin I am tempted to hide. Thank you for forgiveness through Jesus. Help me turn from it, receive your cleansing, and take responsibility for what I have done. Amen.

Use this as a starting point, then speak in your own words.

Reflect

What changes when you believe that honesty can lead toward mercy rather than only exposure?

Act today

Name one specific sin privately to God. Identify one fitting step of repentance, such as an honest apology or a change in access to temptation. If the issue is recurring or serious, arrange confidential support from a trustworthy mature disciple or pastor.
