Week 2 · Learning to abide
Day 12
The Spirit helps you follow
Before you read, ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand the passage and respond honestly.
Read
John 14:15-27
Read in the ESV ↗Read the whole passage slowly, twice if you can. Then come back here.
Understand
Jesus comforts his disciples before his death and promises the Holy Spirit. The Spirit will be with them and will teach and remind these first witnesses of Jesus’ words. Their testimony is foundational for the church. We receive it through Scripture rather than assuming every private impression has the same authority.
The Spirit directs us toward Jesus and helps us live in loving obedience. You can ask for help with understanding, patience, courage, and resisting temptation. His presence is not measured by whether you feel unusually spiritual today. A disciple relies on God’s promise and responds to the truth he has given.
Pray
Holy Spirit, thank you for your presence with God's people. Help me understand Jesus' words and remember them when I need them. Strengthen me to obey with love rather than fear. Amen.
Use this as a starting point, then speak in your own words.
Reflect
In what situation do you need help applying what Jesus teaches?
Act today
Identify one instruction from Scripture that you already understand. Ask the Spirit for help and take a small, specific step of obedience. If you are unsure what a passage means, write the question and seek guidance before making a major decision from it.
