Week 2 · Learning to abide

Day 11
Learn the prayer Jesus taught

Before you read, ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand the passage and respond honestly.

Read

Matthew 6:5-13

Read in the ESV ↗

Read the whole passage slowly, twice if you can. Then come back here.

Understand

Jesus addresses the motives and assumptions behind prayer before giving his disciples a pattern. Prayer is not a performance for observers or a technique for wearing God down. The Father knows our needs, and he welcomes us to ask.

The prayer begins with God’s name, kingdom, and will. It also brings daily provision, forgiveness, relationships, and protection into his care. Let these priorities shape your own words. Asking for daily bread teaches a disciple to depend on God in ordinary needs. Praying for his will teaches us to seek more than immediate comfort or control.

Pray

Father, help me honor your name and desire your will. Provide what I need today. Forgive my sins and help me forgive. Protect me from temptation and evil. Teach me to trust you. Amen.

Use this as a starting point, then speak in your own words.

Reflect

Which part of Jesus' pattern receives the least attention in your prayers?

Act today

Pray through the passage slowly. After each part, add a specific concern in your own words. Name one person to pray for as well as your own needs. At the end, leave one unresolved matter in the Father's care.
