Week 2 · Learning to abide
Day 8
Remain close to Jesus
Before you read, ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand the passage and respond honestly.
Read
John 15:1-11
Read in the ESV ↗Read the whole passage slowly, twice if you can. Then come back here.
Reading the chapters alongside your first ten days? Today's is chapter 8: Belonging to the church.
Understand
On the night before his death, Jesus prepares his disciples for life dependent on him. A branch draws its life from the vine. Abiding describes continuing in that relationship, receiving his words and remaining in his love. Obedience belongs within this fellowship.
Jesus’ image challenges self-sufficiency and encourages steady attention. Reading Scripture and praying are ways to remain attentive to him. They do not mechanically produce fruit or keep him loving you. The Father’s care is purposeful, and Jesus desires his disciples’ joy. Today, ask less about whether you can manage everything and more about how to depend on him in the next faithful step.
Pray
Jesus, I need you for the life you call me to live. Help me remain in your love and receive your words. Holy Spirit, grow fruit in me as I follow him. Amen.
Use this as a starting point, then speak in your own words.
Reflect
What part of your day do you tend to handle without seeking Jesus?
Act today
Set two quiet reminders, perhaps at lunch and before bed. When each comes, pause to remember today's passage. Tell Jesus what is happening and ask for help to respond with trust and love.
