Week 4 · Living as a disciple

Day 29
Failure need not end the conversation

Before you read, ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand the passage and respond honestly.

Read

John 21:1-19

Read in the ESV ↗

Read the whole passage slowly, twice if you can. Then come back here.

Understand

After Peter’s denial and Jesus’ resurrection, Jesus meets his disciples and speaks personally with Peter. He calls Peter to love him, care for his people, and follow him. The scene includes restoration and a sober description of costly discipleship. Grace does not pretend the failure never happened; Jesus brings Peter forward into renewed responsibility.

Peter’s particular commission is not identical to every disciple’s calling. Yet the passage shows the risen Lord’s mercy and authority. When you fail, turn toward Jesus rather than deciding you are beyond his care. Receive correction and appropriate help. Some responsibilities require time, accountability, and renewed trust before they can be resumed.

Pray

Jesus, thank you for your patient mercy. Help me bring failure to you honestly and receive your correction. Teach me to love you and follow you in the responsibilities you place before me. Amen.

Use this as a starting point, then speak in your own words.

Reflect

Has shame been keeping you from prayer, Scripture, or other disciples?

Act today

Resume one healthy practice you have avoided because of shame. Tell a trusted disciple where you need help. If you have missed readings, continue from where you stopped instead of treating unfinished days as a debt you owe God.
