Week 3 · Following Jesus with his people

Day 18
Love becomes visible in service

Before you read, ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand the passage and respond honestly.

Read

John 13:1-17

Read in the ESV ↗

Read the whole passage slowly, twice if you can. Then come back here.

Understand

Knowing who he is and where he is going, Jesus washes his disciples’ feet. He takes a servant’s place while remaining their Lord and Teacher. He also tells Peter that Peter must receive cleansing from him. We receive Jesus’ saving care before we can follow his pattern of love.

The passage calls disciples to humble service. Christians differ about practicing foot washing as a specific church observance, but its demand for concrete love is clear. Notice what someone actually needs rather than choosing a task that makes you look generous. Service rooted in Jesus can be quiet, ordinary, and costly without becoming a way to earn acceptance.

Pray

Jesus, thank you for loving and cleansing your people. Free me from needing the highest place. Help me notice a real need and serve with the humility you have shown. Amen.

Use this as a starting point, then speak in your own words.

Reflect

Which ordinary task do you resist because it seems beneath you?

Act today

Do a practical act of service at home, at work, or in your church. Choose something useful to the other person. Do it without drawing attention to yourself, and thank Jesus for letting his love shape your actions.
