Week 3 · Following Jesus with his people
Day 16
Take baptism seriously
Before you read, ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand the passage and respond honestly.
Read
Matthew 28:16-20; Romans 6:1-4
Read in the ESV ↗Read the whole passage slowly, twice if you can. Then come back here.
Understand
The risen Jesus commissions his disciples to make disciples, baptize, and teach obedience to his words. Baptism belongs to following him in community. Paul connects baptism with Christ’s death and resurrection while explaining why grace leads believers away from a life ruled by sin.
Now that you have trusted Jesus, be baptized, even if you were baptized at an earlier time in your life. Your baptism should express the faith you have now, and being baptized again does no harm. Baptism deserves prompt, wholehearted obedience, not delay caused by embarrassment. It is not a substitute for faith, nor a claim that you have reached spiritual maturity. A disciple is still learning when they take this public step.
Pray
Jesus, help me understand baptism and respond faithfully to your command. Give me humility to ask questions and courage to identify with you and your people. Amen.
Use this as a starting point, then speak in your own words.
Reflect
What do you understand about baptism, and what do you still need to ask?
Act today
Ask a pastor at your church to baptize you, and take the next preparation step they give you. This applies even if you were baptized before you trusted Jesus. If your church will not baptize you, talk with a mature disciple about finding a church that will.
