Week 1 · Receiving your new identity
Day 1
Jesus welcomes you to know him
Before you read, ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand the passage and respond honestly.
Read
John 1:1-18
Read in the ESV ↗Read the whole passage slowly, twice if you can. Then come back here.
Reading the chapters alongside your first ten days? Today's is chapter 1: What has happened to me.
Understand
John begins before Jesus’ earthly birth. He identifies Jesus as the eternal Word who is with God and is God. The Son truly became human and made the Father known. Your relationship with Jesus rests on who he is, not on the intensity of your first experience of faith.
John describes those who receive Christ and believe in him as God’s children. Their new life comes from God. Today you begin by receiving that gift with gratitude. You are learning to know the One who came near to bring you to the Father. You can ask him questions, admit confusion, and expect to learn over time.
Pray
Father, thank you for making yourself known through Jesus. Help me understand who he is and receive the new identity you give. Holy Spirit, teach me as I read and pray today. Amen.
Use this as a starting point, then speak in your own words.
Reflect
What does this passage reveal about Jesus that helps you trust him?
Act today
Read verses 12-13 again. Write a sentence beginning, Because of Jesus, I can come to God as… Then tell God what that means to you. Return to that thought once during your day.
