Part one · Understanding your new life
Chapter 9
Following Jesus in ordinary life
Read in your Bible
Colossians 3:12-17; James 1:19-27; 1 Peter 4:8-11
Read in the ESV ↗Discipleship takes place in the life you already have. Jesus’ lordship shapes how you speak at home, work when no one is watching, spend money, treat your body, and respond to people who frustrate you. Daily time with him prepares you for these ordinary places of love and obedience.
In Colossians 3, Paul grounds his instructions in the believers’ new life with Christ. They are to put away old patterns and practice compassion, humility, patience, forgiveness, and love. Christian character grows from belonging to Jesus. It should be visible in your relationships, not confined to your private thoughts about God.
Start with the next conversation. Listen before composing your reply. Refuse gossip. Tell the truth with kindness. When you have been wrong, apologize specifically. Forgiveness means releasing personal vengeance and seeking another’s good; rebuilding trust and reconciliation can require repentance, time, wise boundaries, and safety. You may need help working this out.
Your resources are also part of discipleship. Stewardship means caring for what God entrusts to you: time, abilities, possessions, and opportunities. Practice generosity willingly and responsibly. Giving is never a fee for God’s favor or a guarantee that he will make you wealthy (2 Corinthians 9:6-8). A small, thoughtful act of service can be a meaningful expression of love.
Following Christ may create tension with old habits or expectations. Ask for wisdom about which influences strengthen faith and which draw you toward sin. Love people who do not share your faith without joining harmful conduct or treating them as enemies. Do your responsibilities faithfully. If a command seems hard, seek help understanding and obeying it rather than quietly dismissing it.
You will not change everything in a day. Ask the Holy Spirit to identify a faithful next step. A clear, limited response often helps more than a sweeping promise you have not thought through. Review it with someone who knows you and can encourage you.
Begin here
Choose one relationship, one responsibility, or one use of money. Ask how Jesus' words should shape it this week. Take a concrete step and notice what you learn.
Reflect
Where does your ordinary day most need the character of Christ?
Pray
Lord Jesus, help me follow you in the parts of life I call ordinary. Give me your love for people and wisdom to use what you have entrusted to me. Amen.
