Part one · Understanding your new life
Chapter 5
Learning to pray
Read in your Bible
Matthew 6:5-13; Hebrews 4:14-16; Philippians 4:4-9
Read in the ESV ↗Prayer is speaking with God in response to who he is and what he has said. You come to the Father through Jesus, with the help of the Holy Spirit. You can use ordinary words. God is not impressed by religious vocabulary or persuaded by the length of a prayer. Jesus welcomes honest dependence.
In Matthew 6, Jesus corrects prayer performed for an audience and prayer that treats repeated words as a technique. He gives his disciples a pattern: honor the Father’s name, desire his kingdom and will, ask for daily needs, seek forgiveness, extend forgiveness, and ask for protection from evil. You can pray his pattern slowly and put each part into your own words.
Begin with who God is. Thank him for a specific gift. Confess a specific sin without explaining it away. Ask for what you and others need. Leave room to be honest about grief or confusion. The Psalms show God’s people bringing both praise and pain to him. Reverence and honesty belong together.
When you pray, you do not need to manufacture a reply in your mind. God has spoken reliably in Scripture. A thought that comes during prayer should be tested by Scripture and wise counsel, not immediately announced as God’s voice. You can ask for guidance while admitting uncertainty about a particular impression.
God hears his children, yet he does not promise every desired outcome or immediate relief. Jesus himself prayed in anguish and submitted to the Father (Mark 14:32-42). Persistent prayer is trust in God’s goodness through circumstances you may not understand. An unanswered request is not proof that your faith is defective.
Begin here
Pray for five minutes using the pattern above. If your attention wanders, return without turning the interruption into a verdict on your faith. Keep a short prayer list. Over time, notice answers and changes in your desires. Bring concerns to other disciples so they can pray with you.
Reflect
What have you hesitated to tell God, even though he already knows?
Pray
Father, thank you that I may come to you through Jesus. Teach me to seek your will and ask for what I need. Help me trust you while I wait. Amen.
